Hinterlands

Those from the Hinterlands are from regions outside the cities but part of the lands of a city-state, such as Tavia.

This generally means they are closer to nature, and also more familiar with the threat of the Shadow Curtain and its creatures.

Hinterland Refugee

A former resident in the hinterlands but now seeking refugee in Tavia, due to either the advance of the shadow curtain, attack of demonic creatures, or possibly trouble with more mundane raiders or warriors from another city-state. You presently are squatting in an abandoned tower, maybe alone, maybe with other refugees.

You start with:

  • 3 Traits
  • Three of the following as bonus skills (treat as a class skill with rank equal to your level): Swimming. Climbing, Survival, Riding, Handle Animal, Healing, Craft (of a type normally found in a village, like smith, carpenter, etc.)
  • As a survivor, you have shown either great fortitude, agility or cunning (your choice of +2 to con, dex or int, max 20)
  • If you are a refugee from shadow or demons, your experience has left you with some defenses against this scourge, choose one of: resistance 3 to one energy type (stacks with other racial resistance but not spells or spell effects), knowldege(planes) as a class skill with rank equal to your level, or Spell Resistance of 5 plus your level.
  • Starting gold is 20GP (in any coin denomination) and you may have up to 120 GP of equipment, including one-shot magic items

Note: there really isn’t a good reason to be a refugee who wasn’t fleeing shadows or demons but if you want to, it’s your choice.

Seeking Fortune in the Big City

You come from the same background as the hinterlands refugee, except that you chose to leave, which means you start with more money but do not have some of the survivor bonuses of the refugee.

  • No choice of energy resistance, spell resistance or planes knowledge
  • You do not have a choice of stat bonus but as a hardy peasant, you can have +2 to Con, max 20
  • 50GP in any coins, gems or jewelry
  • 250 GP of starting gear
  • A horse (with basic gear) or your buddy, sibling, boy/girlfriend, who you convinced to travel to the city with you (Level 1 NPC follower). You can also have brought your horse and sold it in the city for an additional 50GP if you don’t want the follower. Hint: choose the buddy.
